#ThisWeekinHistory at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, thousands of protesters against the Vietnam War battled police in the streets while the Democratic Party fractured over a platform statement on Vietnam #AceHistoryDesk reports

#AceHistoryNews – Aug.31: In one day and night, the Cold War consensus that had dominated American thinking since the late 1940s was shattered: The Democratic Party held its national convention in Chicago in #1968 and problems immediately arose both inside and outside the convention #AceHistoryDesk reports

https://t.me/HistoricalPics/9159: Inside, the delegates were split on the party’s stance concerning the ongoing Vietnam War: As the debate intensified, fights broke out on the convention floor, and delegates and reporters were kicked, punched, and knocked to the ground: On the streets of Chicago, antiwar protesters massed in the downtown area. Mayor Richard Daley responded by unleashing the Chicago police force.

Thousands of policemen stormed into the crowd, swinging their clubs and firing tear gas: Stunned Americans watched on TV as the police battered and beat protesters, reporters, and anyone else in the way. The protesters began to chant, “The whole world is watching. The whole world is watching.” The world–and the American nation–was indeed watching that night.

The convention events marked an important turning point: no longer would the government have unrestrained power to pursue its Cold War policies. When future international crises arose–in Central America, the Middle East, or Africa–the cry of “No more Vietnams” was a reminder that the government’s Cold War rhetoric would be closely scrutinized and often criticised. #Yippie #Protest #Chicago #USHistory #ColdWar #ThisWeekInHistory #AceHistoryNews

On #ThisDayinHistory 1997, the world lost the “People’s Princess”. She was b orn in 1961, and started her career as a kindergarten teacher. She married Prince Charles in 1981 and they h ad two sons—Prince William in 1982 and Prince Henry (Harry) in 1984 #AceHistoryDesk reports

#AceHistoryNews – Aug.31: Their marriage, however, was an unhappy one, and they divorced officially in 1996: Diana became a global icon of popular culture and developed relationships with a number of entertainment personalities, including singers George Michael and Elton John #AceHistoryDesk reports

https://t.me/HistoricalPics/9167: She was also admired because she used her fame to raise public awareness—and charitable funds—for issues that mattered to her: As a former teacher, she was a lifelong advocate for children and supported efforts to abolish the use of land mines.

She also advocated for AIDS-related causes and she is credited with helping to change the public’s perception of those who suffer from the disease: She famously shook the hands of a patient with AIDS, in front of the media, without wearing gloves, dispelling the notion that the disease is transmitted via touch.

On the evening of August 31, 1997, Diana and Dodi Al-Fayed left a late night dinner and were involved in a car accident that took both of their lives: The death of Princess Diana was immediately followed by an unprecedented outpouring of grief from all over the world. #PrincessDiana #RIP #OTD #AceHistoryNews
