#ThisWeekinHistory 1969, you may have seen a particular holiday billboard: They were a part of John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s peace campaign and read “War is over! If you want it. Happy Christmas from John & Yoko” #AceHistoryNews – @AceHistoryNews

#AceHistoryNews – Dec.18: The campaign launched in 12 global cities: New York, Los Angeles, Toronto, Rome, Athens, Amsterdam, Berlin, Paris, London, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Helsinki #AceHistoryDesk reports

There were also full page newspaper ads, pamphlets, and posters…….Many have thought that the billboards were inspired by Lennon’s song Happy Xmas (War Is Over), but in fact it was the billboard campaign that inspired the song………….When the billboards were erected, the war in Vietnam had reached a terrible record as around 40,000 American servicemen had died. Opposition to the war had also climaxed that November with around 250,000 people marching in Washington D.C. #WarisOver #JohnLennon #YokoOno #Billboard #GivePeaceAChance #OTD #AceHistoryNews
