#AceHistoryNews – Nov.06: Lincoln received only 40 percent of the popular vote but handily defeated the three other candidates: Southern Democrat John C. Breckinridge, Constitutional Union candidate John Bell, and Northern Democrat Stephen Douglas, a U.S. senator for Illinois #AceHistoryNews reports

https://t.me/HistoricalPics/7355 This photograph of Lincoln, taken in Springfield, Illinois, on May 20, 1860, was the first portrait taken of him after he had received the nomination for president at the Republican National Convention in Chicago……….Even though he’s fifty-one years old here, Lincoln looks much younger in this photograph, his hair, described by Sir William Howard Russell as a “thatch of wild Republican hair.” He is clean shaven though as he did not grow his characteristic beard until October 1860……….He was the first U.S. to wear a beard, and appears clean-shaven in only one-third of the more than one hundred known photographs of him…………By the time of Lincoln’s inauguration on March 4, 1861, the Confederate States of America had been formally established, with Jefferson Davis as its elected president………One month later, the American Civil War began when Confederate forces under General P.G.T. Beauregard opened fire on Union-held Fort Sumter in South Carolina in 1863. #AbrahamLincoln #Presidents #Lincoln #USHistory #AceHistoryNews
