#AceHistoryNews – Nov.05: REMEMBER, remember the fifth of November, gunpowder, treason and plot………So why do we remember the 5th, who was Guy Fawkes and why do the British celebrate with fireworks? #AceHistoryDesk reports

Guy Fawkes was a soldier and revolutionary who was sentenced to death for his role in the notorious Gunpowder Plot. Led by Robert Catesby, Fawkes and others plotted to assassinate the Protestant King James I and other members of the British government by blowing up the House of Lords………….Fawkes and his accomplices packed the cellar beneath Westminster Palace with 35 barrels of gunpowder, which they planned to detonate on November 5, 1605, during the opening of Parliament…………An alleged anonymous letter tipped off the authorities and Fawkes and his surviving co-conspirators were found guilty of high treason and sentenced to death………Moments before his execution, Fawkes jumped from a ladder to the gallows, breaking his neck and dying…………In the aftermath of the plot, new laws banned Catholics from voting in elections, practicing law or serving in the military. In fact, Catholics were not fully emancipated in England until the 19th century……….In Great Britain Guy Fawkes Day became a time to gather together, set off fireworks, light bonfires, and burn effigies of Fawkes. #guyfawkes #november5th #bonfirenight #AceNewsDesk reports are provided by Sterling Publishing & Media News
