On #ThisDayinHistory 1963, in the 16th Street Baptist Church, a bomb explodes during Sunday morning services, killing four young girls #AceHistoryNews – @AceHistoryNews

#AceHistoryNews – Sept.15: The 16th Street Baptist Church served as a meeting place for civil rights leaders like Martin Luther King, Jr., who once called Birmingham a “symbol of hardcore resistance to integration.” Alabama’s governor, George Wallace, made preserving racial segregation one of the central goals of his administration #AceHistoryDesk reports

https://t.me/HistoricalPics/7036 The church bombing was the third Birmingham had seen in 11 days. Fifteen sticks of dynamite were planted in the church basement……….The bomb detonated at 10:19 a.m., killing Cynthia Wesley, Carole Robertson and Addie Mae Collins–all 14 years old, and 11-year-old Denise McNair………..More than 20 other members of the congregation were injured in the blast……..When thousands of angry black protesters assembled at the crime scene, Wallace sent hundreds of police and state troopers to the area to break up the crowd…………Two young black men were killed that night, one by police………..Public outrage over the bombing grew, drawing international attention to Birmingham…….At a funeral for three of the girls King addressed more than 8,000 mourners……….Klan member, Robert Chambliss, was charged with murder but in October 1963, he was cleared of the murder……..Although a subsequent FBI investigation identified three other men–Bobby Frank Cherry, Herman Cash and Thomas E. Blanton, Jr.–as having helped Chambliss commit the crime, it was later revealed that FBI chairman J. Edgar Hoover blocked their prosecution and shut down the investigation without filing charges in 1968…….After Alabama Attorney General Bill Baxley reopened the case, Chambliss was convicted in 1977 and sentenced to life in prison……..Efforts to prosecute the other three men continued for decades…….Though Cash died in 1994, Cherry and Blanton were arrested and charged with four counts of murder in 2000. Blanton was convicted and sentenced to life in prison. Cherry’s trial was delayed after judges ruled he was mentally incompetent to stand trial………This decision was later reversed. On May 22, 2002, Cherry was convicted and sentenced to life …..#Birmingham #CivilRights #1960s #4littlegirls #AceHistoryNews

On #ThisDayinHistory 1940, the Lascaux cave paintings were discovered near Montignac, France when four teenagers just stumbled upon the ancient artwork after following their dog into a cavern #AceHistoryNews – @AceHistoryNews

#AceHistoryNews – Sept.12: It was four teenagers who stumbled upon the ancient artwork after following their dog down a narrow entrance into a cavern #AceHistoryDesk reports

https://t.me/HistoricalPics/7008 The 15,000- to 17,000-year-old paintings, consisting mostly of animal representations, are among the finest examples of art from the Upper Paleolithic period……….First studied by the French archaeologist Henri-Édouard-Prosper Breuil, the Lascaux grotto consists of a main cavern 66 feet wide and 16 feet high………..The walls of the cavern are decorated with some 600 painted and drawn animals and symbols and nearly 1,500 engravings………..The pictures depict in excellent detail numerous types of animals, including horses, red deer, stags, bovines, felines, and what appear to be mythical creatures……….Archaeologists believe that the cave was used over a long period of time as a center for hunting and religious rites……..The Lascaux grotto was opened to the public in 1948 but was closed in 1963 because artificial lights had faded the vivid colors of the paintings and caused algae to grow over some of them………A replica of the Lascaux cave was opened nearby in 1983 and receives tens of thousands of visitors annually…..#Lascaux #paleolithic #ancienthistory #AceHistoryNews

On #ThisDayinHistory 1991, Nirvana releases their landmark single “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” No one—not Nirvana’s biggest fans, not their biggest industry supporters and certainly not the band-members themselves— suspected the magnitude of what was about to happen #AceHistoryNews – @ AceHistoryNews

#AceHistoryNews – Sept.10: In just a few short months, a group that was a complete nonentity to the mainstream music-buying public would become the most important rock band on earth #AceHistoryDesk reports

https://t.me/HistoricalPics/6995 The song Nirvana’s label and management hoped would be a hit off the band’s forthcoming album, Nevermind, was “Come as You Are,” which was set for release later in the fall. “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was released quietly and without significant promotion in the hopes that it would begin building awareness of the new album among listeners to college and alternative radio…The rest is history….#Nirvana #musichistory #smellsliketeenspirit #AceHistoryNews

On #ThisDayinHistory 1850, California becomes a state in record time. It had only been a part of the United States for less than two years, California became the 31st state in the union without ever even having been a territory #AceHistoryNews – @AceHistoryNews

#AceHistoryNews – Sept.10: Mexico had reluctantly ceded California and much of its northern territory to the United States in the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo #AceHistoryDesk reports

https://t.me/HistoricalPics/6993 When the Mexican diplomats signed the treaty, they pictured California as a region of sleepy mission towns with a tiny population of about 7,300-not a devastating loss to the Mexican empire……Their regret might have been much sharper had they known that gold had been discovered at Sutter’s Mill in Coloma, California, nine days before they signed the peace treaty……….Suddenly, the greatest gold rush in history was on, and “forty-niners” began flooding into California chasing after the fist-sized gold nuggets rumored to be strewn about the ground just waiting to be picked up……..California’s population and wealth skyrocketed………Most newly acquired regions of the U.S. went through long periods as territories before they had the 60,000 inhabitants needed to achieve statehood, and prior to the Gold Rush, emigration to California had been so slow that it would have been decades before the population reached that number……..But with gold fever reaching epidemic proportions around the world, more than 60,000 people from around the globe came to California in 1849 alone. #California #USHistory #statehistory #AceHistoryNews
