Snippets of History: Is that an early 1960s era sunrise over Las Vegas? Nope, it’s the flash of an atomic bomb test lighting up the still dark predawn sky #AceHistoryNews – @AceHistoryNews

#AceHistoryNews – Aug.23: Back in the day, Vegas wasn’t just the place to go if you wanted to gamble, elope, or vacation in the sun. It was also a place where you could go and watch a nuclear warhead being detonated in the desert outside of “Sin City” #AceHistoryDesk reports

https://t.me/HistoricalPics/6878 So much like people temporarily migrated by the tens of thousands to be in eclipse totality yesterday, untold numbers once went to Vegas in order to watch the flash and subsequent mushroom cloud boil over the horizon #AceHistoryNews

Snippets of History: Maȟpíya Lúta, born near the Platte River, in the still wild Nebraska pla ins during the year 1822, he would come to be known as “Red Cloud”, and be an essential character in the sto ry of the American west – @AceHistoryNews

#AceHistoryNews – Aug.23: Red Cloud was just a toddler when his parents died in 1825, but Old Chief Smoke adopted the orphan, and brought him into his home where he was raised #AceHistoryDesk reports

https://t.me/HistoricalPics/6881 Smoke was a well recognized leader, famous for splitting the Oglala up and moving part of the tribe east into Wyoming. He was also known as a “shirt wearer“, a group of fierce fighters who had proven themselves in battle against other warring tribes of the plains. Red Cloud would’ve been raised with this family of prominence, a proud warrior adopted father, and the attributes of a leader of their people. It would be an experience that would serve him well as he became a leader himself someday #AceHistoryNews

#AceHistoryNews – Aug.22: Among its five members was a local man named Jean-Henri Dunant #AceHistoryDesk reports

https://t.me/HistoricalPics/6876 When the first Geneva Convention was adopted, it called for nonpartisan care to the sick and wounded in times of war and also proposed the use of an international emblem to mark medical personnel and supplies. In honor of Dunant’s nationality, a red cross on a white background–the Swiss flag in reverse–was chosen and in 1901, Dunant was awarded the first Nobel Peace Prize.
In 1881, American humanitarians Clara Barton and Adolphus Solomons founded the American National Red Cross, an organization designed to provide humanitarian aid to victims of wars and natural disasters in congruence with the International Red Cross. #RedCross #ICRC #Humanitarian #history #AceHistoryNews

Snippets of History: On #ThisDayinHistory 1959, Hawaii becomes the 50th US state. The first known settlers of the Hawaiian Islands were Polynesian voyagers who arrived sometime in the eighth century #AceHistoryNews – @AceHistoryNews

#AceHistoryNews – Aug.22: But people had been visiting since the early 18th century, when traders came to Hawaii to exploit the islands’ sandalwood #AceHistoryDesk reports

https://t.me/HistoricalPics/6870 In the 1830s, the sugar industry was introduced to Hawaii and by the mid-19th century had become well established. In 1893, a group of American expatriates and sugar planters supported by a division of U.S. Marines deposed the last reigning monarch of Hawaii, Queen Liliuokalani. One year later, the Republic of Hawaii was established as a U.S. protectorate with Hawaiian-born Sanford B. Dole as president. Many in Congress opposed the formal annexation of Hawaii, and it was not until 1898, following the use of the naval base at Pearl Harbor during the Spanish-American War that Hawaii’s strategic importance became evident and formal annexation was approved. Two years later, Hawaii was organized into a formal U.S. territory. During World War II, Hawaii became firmly ensconced in the American national identity following the surprise Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. In March 1959, the U.S. government approved statehood for Hawaii, and in June the Hawaiian people voted by a wide majority to accept admittance into the United States. Two months later, Hawaii officially became the 50th state. #Hawaii #USA #AceHistoryNews

#AceHistoryNews – Aug.21: Solar and lunar eclipses, astronomical events that occur when the Earth, the Sun and the Moon are aligned, have figured prominently in human history #AceHistoryDesk reports

https://t.me/HistoricalPics/6864 Striking to behold, eclipses often were viewed as supernatural phenomena. They also allowed ancient civilizations to develop sophisticated calendars, convinced Aristotle the Earth was round and helped Einstein prove his theory of relativity.
